Protesters accuse insurance industry of hiring ‘corporate spies’

Climate change protesters have said that they are being tailed by corporate spies hired by the insurance sector.

Boycottt Bloody Insurance claimed that two such spies arrived at the protesters’ meeting point yesterday (11 August 2026) and took photos of the activists.

The group also alleged that the two spies have been identified at previous protests, telling activists that they have a WhatsApp chat of all known protesters against the insurance sector.

The claims come following the group’s latest protest, which went ahead outside the Walkie Talkie foyer.

Dressed in artistic costumes, they depicted the biodiversity of the Coral Triangle in a call for insurers to rule out underwriting liquefied natural gas (LNG) expansion across this region.

The Coral Triangle spans Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, the Solomon Islands and Timor-Leste and is regarded as one of the world’s most biodiverse marine regions.

Campaigners argue that insurance is essential for major LNG developments to proceed and are calling on insurers and other financial institutions to stop supporting new fossil fuel infrastructure, particularly in environmentally sensitive areas.

One of the protesters said: “We are here to let insurers know that if they underwrite LNG expansion in the Coral Triangle they will devastate an extraordinary web of life and millions of people, which is critical for climate stability and food security globally.”

Another added: “The costumes we are wearing represent what could be lost. Behind every project proposal are coral reefs, mangroves, fisheries and communities that depend on them.

“Insurers have the power to draw a line and say no to LNG expansion in this region. If they truly care about risk they have no other choice.”
