’No matter if you’re 9 or 99, ice cream is always a highlight of a summer day out,’ says head
English Heritage has launched a new “ice cream splat insurance” initiative that will offer replacement ice creams to visitors who accidentally drop their treats during a day out.
The scheme will run throughout August at 18 English Heritage sites and will automatically cover visitors who purchase scooped ice cream in a cone or cup.
Under the initiative, anyone who drops an ice cream can return to the point of purchase and receive a replacement free of charge.
Daisy Rowe, head of commercial development at English Heritage, said: “No matter if you’re 9 or 99, ice cream is always a highlight of a summer day out. However, I’m sure we’ve all had that experience when the long-awaited treat arrives and ends up splat on the floor.
”We know how important days out are to our families for making special memories and don’t want anything to ruin that. This is why we’re so pleased to introduce ice cream splat insurance at 18 of our sites this summer.”
Availability
The move follows research commissioned by English Heritage, which found that 68% of people would be too embarrassed or polite to ask for a replacement if they dropped an ice cream. At the same time, 70% of respondents said an ice cream was one of the highlights of a day out for a child or grandchild.

The organisation also found generational differences in attitudes towards replacing dropped ice creams. More than a quarter of Gen Z respondents (27%) said they would ask for a replacement, compared with 22% of millennials and just 16% of baby boomers.
